Anna University Sexual Assault Case: The Tamil Nadu BJP unit on Thursday accused the state police of leaking the identity details of the Anna University sexual assault victim by making public the details of the FIR registered in the case.

It comes amid ongoing outrage and political row over the sexual assault case from Anna University campus in Chennai, where a 19-year-old student was sexually assaulted and her boyfriend attacked by two unidentified men on December 23, according to the complaint filed on Tuesday.

Tamil Nadu BJP leader Annamalai condemned the act of publicizing the identity details of the victim through the FIR and wrote a letter to the National Commission for Women, seeking action against the officials involved in releasing the victim’s details.

“In the case of the Anna University student, what is even more intolerable is that the Tamil Nadu Police has released the identity details of the victim along with her home address through the copy of the FIR,” the BJP leader. written in the letter.

“This heinous and reckless act by the TN Police is a flagrant violation of the victim’s rights. The act appears to be a concerted effort by the TN Police and the ruling PuK dispensation to malign the character of the victim to save the collapsed maintenance of law and order by the state,” the letter further said.

He further criticized the ruling DMK for supporting people involved in crimes against women. “It is disheartening that these perpetrators of crimes against women are influencing the Tamil Nadu police force with the fullest support of local DMK leaders, MLAs and ministers.”

Annamalai slams DMK for identity leak

The BJP leader hit out at the DMK, saying the ruling party had failed in its basic duty to protect the details of the victims. “This is not only against individual rights but also against an illegal act. Chief Minister MP Stalin is fully responsible for this,” Annamalai said in an X post.

“I strongly condemn the DMK government and Chief Minister Stalin, who is in charge of the police, for engaging in such vile and unscrupulous activities to protect a DMK sex offender. Stalin, shame on you for making Tamil Nadu an unsafe state for women,” he added.

Accused by DMK, claims BJP

Earlier, Annamalai alleged that the accused was involved in similar crimes in the past and shared his photographs with top DMK leaders, including Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, son of Chief Minister MK Stalin.

Gnanasekaran, the arrested accused, is the deputy organizer of DMK’s Saidai East student wing, the BJP leader claimed. The accused was remanded for 15 days following a massive protest demanding legal action against him.

Responding to the allegations, DMK leader and Tamil Nadu Law Minister S Regupathi on Thursday dismissed the allegations and said the accused in the university student sexual assault case is not even a senior member of the DMK.

On the photograph of the accused with MLA Stalin’s son, the minister said there was a clear gap between Gnanasekaran and the Deputy CM and pointed out that the picture was clicked by someone and such cases cannot be prevented.

Police said the victim, who used to sell biryani on the roadside outside the university, has confessed to the crime and further investigation to trace his involvement in the earlier cases is underway.
