Court sends two, including Qamrul, to jail in Jubo Dal leader’s murder case

A Dhaka court today rejected the bail pleas of former food minister Qamrul Islam and former Awami League MP Solaiman Mohammad Salim and sent them to jail in a case filed over the death of Jubo Dal leader Shamim Mia. in Dhaka’s Paltan last year.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mr Ziaudur Rahman gave the order after investigating officer Dr Ferdous Alam, a sub-inspector of Paltan Model Police Station, produced them before the court at the completion of four-day remand in the case.

In the handover report, the IO said that he had found important information about the killing which was being verified, so they should be jailed till the investigation is completed.

The defense filed two separate petitions seeking bail on the grounds that they were brought into the case only to harass them. Moreover, they are sick, said the defense.

During the hearing, the magistrate rejected the defense pleas and ordered the two accused to be sent to the Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj.

According to the case documents, on 28 October 2023, the BNP held a rally in Dhaka and the AL, in response, held its own rally in the same area.

AL members, with the support of law enforcement, attacked the BNP gathering in Nayapaltan, resulting in Shamim’s death on the spot.

On September 14, Abbas Ali, a former Jubo Dal central committee member, submitted the murder case to the Paltan model police station, naming 704 people, including prominent AL leaders and police officials, and around 12,000 unnamed people .
