This new firefighter station honors the Black Trailblazer historian

Riviera Beach, Fla. – Riviera Beach’s The newest fire station It is an ode to the past and present.

The 87 Fire Station on Avenue H West will double that the first emergency operations center of the city, offering a centralized location to coordinate emergency answers.

On the walls and on the “87” halls, giants like Richard Wester are honored. Wester was the first African -American firefighter in Palm Beach County and got up in lines to become the first head of black firefighters in Palm Beach and Florida County.

Known affectionately as “boss”, Wester died at the end of 2024, but his legacy lives with a new statue and mural at Firehouse.

Anchor WPTV Hollani Davis has contacted another Trailblazer, who spoke about Wester’s lasting imprint, because the city celebrates the newest service house and the month of black history.

Fire Station 87 opens in Riviera Beach

Keith Golden was hired as the first black firefighter head for Riviera Beach. As a young man, he remembers that he admired the “boss” when he will pass by the firefighter or outside and in the community. He credits him today, because he opened the door for him.

“For someone like me, who had aspirations to be a chief officer, I knew I could do it because someone did it before me,” Golden said.

The fire station 87 infuses some of the latest technologies that will continue to help firefighters to save lives, at the same time being a will of the first service and the first respondents who are proudly responding to the appeal.
