22 -day child marks 65 times with hot sickle

Amravati: In a terrible case of brutality based on superstition, a 22-day child was marked 65 times with a hot sickle in the name of “traditional healing” for the breathing obtained on Tuesday. This inhuman act took place in the village of Seeerei in Chikhaldara Taluka, amravati, leaving the child in critical condition. The child was admitted to the UCI at the Women Hospital in Amravati District on Tuesday, for an advanced treatment.
Medical experts believe that the baby may suffer from a congenital heart disease that leads to breathing difficulties. While branding itself could not cause severe internal damage, the child’s heart rate irregularities require a 2D echo test for the appropriate diagnosis. Unfortunately, this unit is not yet available at the hospital, but efforts are made to arrange it soon. If the baby’s condition remains critical, it could be moved to Nagpur for specialized treatment.
This disturbing incident highlights the superstitions and dangerous practices deeply rooted in the Melghat region, dominated by the tribe. Sources said that the authorities and the health department should take strict measures to prevent the recurrence of these incidents and to spread awareness about the available scientific medical treatment.
