The Marlin water system temporarily changes the treatment to improve water quality

MARLIN, Texas (KWTX) – The city of Marlin said the public water system will temporarily convert the disinfectant used in the distribution system from chloramine to free chlorine.

The city says the conversion is scheduled to begin Nov. 1 and continue through Nov. 30.

During this time, residents may experience changes in the taste or smell of their water, but the city says there is no need to boil your water.

The process can cause the water to turn brown, but “There is no health problem with drinking brown water as it is safe to drink, however, the conversion alone can cause taste and odor problems, so you may want to cook with store-bought water if it affects your area.”

Marlin says public water systems must disinfect their water and distribution systems. The city says they use chloramine, free chlorine with ammonia, as a disinfectant.

“A temporary conversion to free chlorine, in partnership with flushing activities, helps … improve overall water quality,” the city says.

Marlin says this process is what they consider a deep clean, and they try to do this twice a year.

The city also says there will be more hydrant flushing in November, so residents shouldn’t be alarmed if they see water running down the streets.

Marlin asks residents to share this information with those who may not have received this information, and if residents have questions, they should contact water treatment staff at 254-883-3371.
