The government reinforces the supervision of mineral exports, opens a road to transparent trade – Malawi Nyasa Times

The Ministry of Mining asked all the holders of mineral licenses that exported minerals, including precious stones, between January 1, 2024 and February 17, 2024, to present their export statements as part of their authorization obligations.

In a statement, the ministry stressed that compliance with this requirement is crucial to obtain future export permits.

“The ministry would like to emphasize that the export authorizations will be granted only to the license holders who have filed their export declaration,” the statement said.

This directive highlights the government’s commitment to improve transparency and responsibility in the Malawi mineral sector. For years, there have been concerns about unregulated exports, income losses and Malawi natural resources. By ensuring that all exports are documented, the government takes a critical step towards reducing illegal trade and ensuring the correct benefits for the country.

At the same time, the ministry provided precious stones exporters that substantial progress is made in the revision of the precious stone export frame. This reform aims to make export procedures more efficient, which makes them more effective while promoting responsible mining and commercial practices.

The movement reports a wider effort of the government to formalize the mineral sector, to protect national interests and to position Malawi as a competitive player in global markets of precious and mineral stones.
