Craddick Files House Bill 5 to establish the Institute of Dementia Prevention and Research in Texas

February 25 – Austin – The representative of Tom Craddick submitted Bill House 5 to create the Institute for Dementia Prevention and Research (DPRIT), a state -of -the -art initiative aimed at promoting research, prevention and treatment for Alzheimer’s.

“Alzheimer’s is an increasing crisis that affects countless Texani and their families. We need to take bold measures to combat this disease,” said Craddick. “HB 5 sets a dedicated institute to drive research, develop prevention programs and to support innovative medical progress that will improve the life of the Texans.”

The Institute for Dementia Prevention and Research in Texas will finance and accelerate research on causes, prevention and treatment of dementia, Alzheimer’s and related disorders, while supporting medical and scientific discoveries that improve Texas in medical research. The Institute will grant subsidies to higher education institutions, medical research facilities and other public or private entities dedicated to the fight against Alzheimer. In addition, it will develop prevention programs aimed at reducing the impact of dementia on Texas communities.

“Texas is in the third place in the nation in the number of cases Alzheimer’s and the second in the nation in Alzheimer’s deaths. The establishment of this institute will give hope to all future generations that Texas will be a leader in the prevention of Alzheimer,” Craddick added.

The legislative session in Texas began on January 14, 2025 and will take place until June 2, 2025. HB 5 represents a major step in approaching one of the most pressing health care challenges.
