The Shanghai man cheated by $ 28,000 by Ai ‘girlfriend’: media state

Shanghai: A man from Shanghai lost almost $ 28,000 after being fooled in a long distance “long-distance relationship with a girlfriend, reported on Wednesday (February 26).

The scammers used a generative artificial intelligence software to create realistic videos and static images of a young woman to pose as a fictional “Mrs.”, according to the CCTV state broadcaster.

The victim transferred almost 200,000 yuan (almost $ 28,000) to what he thought was the bank’s bank account online, after the scams used fake images to convince him that his “girlfriend” needed funds to open an business and help a relative with medical bills.

The scams even created a false ID and medical reports to support Russian, CCTV reported.

The operation was performed by a “scam team that sent videos and photos that were created through AI or taken by combining several images,” said CCTV, citing a police investigation.

“Throughout the process, (the victim) Mr. Liu did not meet Mrs. Jiao in person,” he added.

A CCTV video showed photos with a woman in different scenarios, including posing with a paint palette and sitting on a city street.

The appearance of tools you have to generate text, images and even live videos has led to more and more sophisticated scams around the world.

Earlier this month, the US social networks, Meta warned Internet users to avoid online acquaintances who promise romance, but in search of cash, mentioning that scams that used generatively were increasing.
