The member of the Council, Julie Won, has successfully introduced the legislation for the suspension of alternative parking on Losar, also known as the Tibetan New Year.

The Losar date varies each year depending on the Tibetan monthly calendar. This year, Losar is celebrated between February 28 and March 2. Losar holidays are usually expanded for a few days, with preparations starting weeks before.

The alternative side parking will be suspended on February 28, Losar’s first day, in accordance with the recently adopted legislation.

Won welcomed the recent passage of Losar Bill Into.100 In the Local Council, stating that the law does not suspend only the alternative parking for the Tibetan New Year, but also increases the civic and political power for the Tibetan and Himalayan groups in the city.

In a video posted on social networks alongside the Tibetan community in NY & NJ, Won said the Losar Street parking law will help educate and raise awareness of the Himalayas Buddhist and Tibetan communities.

Won’s district, which includes Woodside and SunnysideIt hosts one of the largest Tibetan and Himalayan communities in New York, with Tibetan enterprises, community centers and religious institutions that play a vital role in the area.

The draft law, which had 42 co-ponsiors, including 39 members of the council and three presidents of the city, was unanimously adopted by the council and represents a holiday of immigrants living in the city in a moment of fear and uncertainty, he said.

“Now, over 61,000 Tibetan buddies in our district and New York can celebrate their most important vacation, without having to worry about moving cars or getting a parking ticket,” Won said in a statement.

“At a time when there is so much fear and uncertainty as a result of federal immigration policies, the bill sends a message we support, recognize and celebrate immigrants living in our sanctuary city – including those who have sought refuge against persecution in their country of origin, as a Tibetan community.”

Alternative side parking, a key component of the street cleaning system in New York, usually requires residents to move their vehicles on designated days.

A financial impact report made by the Municipal Council found that the city will give up about $ 450,000 due to the suspension of alternative side parking on Losar due to loss of fines associated with alternative parking regulations.

NBC New York Previously he found that the city loses hundreds of thousands of dollars for each day when the alternative side parking is suspended.

The new Law adds Losar to the list of recognized holidays for alternative side parking suspensions, Christmas, Eid Ul-Fitr and Diwali as an officially recognized cultural and religious respect.
