Failed fishermen while the 300 kg dolphin jumps in the boat in the islands

First they sought advice through Russell Radio, a maritime radio service, about what to do with their unintentional capture.

The radio operator made him in touch with a doc Ranger, who advised him to keep the dolphin cold, and with the engine back to Waitangi Digty, so that their surprise passenger could receive a health check.

Bauer-Hunt said they used an umbrella and a hose to keep the dolphin cold, taking care not to get water in its hole.

Men and Marin mammal were greeted at the pier by DOC staff and Hapū members, who gave the dolphin a thorough check.

She said that the dolphin for minor men had some scratches in which she landed on the metal bridge, but otherwise it was not unhappy.

“No one was seriously injured, including the dolphin, which was an excellent result,” she said.

Bauer-Hunt estimated that the dolphin weighed 300 kg and, if stretched, landed with the curled tail would have been almost so long as the stable fishing boat.

The dolphin gave the name Tohu, that is, “sign”.

Following his health checking, Tohu was dressed in a pontoon and was towed to the sea by a doc ship.

Once released, Doc staff followed Tohu until they were sure that they were swimming strongly and behaving normally, despite its unhappiness.

Bauer-Hunt said Doc appreciated the young fishermen because they thought quickly and searched for expert tips to ensure the welfare of the dolphin.

She said that anyone is involved in a marin -mammal incident should report to 0800 Doc Hot (0800 362 468).

A similar incident outside the Slipper Island in the Gulf of Plety in 2006 had a less happy result.

In this case, a woman standing on the arch of a pleasure boat suffered serious injuries, after apparently a dolphin missed a jump and landed above her.

However, the dolphin was unhappy.
