At least 11 construction workers were injured when the temporary support structure of a porch under the construction collapsed on Thursday night on the campus of Hyderabad, officials said.

The university administration immediately took measures, alerting the police, the firefighter brigade, the national disaster response (NDRF) team and the officials of the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) that supervise the construction. The ambulances, the land motor machines and cranes were rapidly carried out for rescue operations.

Under the direct supervision of the NDRF team, the excavators eliminated the debris. Fortunately, no worker was trapped and no victims were reported.

Two of the wounded workers received first aid to the University Health Center, while the rest were taken to a nearby corporate hospital. Eight were downloaded after treatment while a worker was kept under observation. His condition was reported to be stable, and was later discharged.

The construction of the building was entrusted to CPWD. “The administration of the University of Hyderabad is deeply concerned about the incident and has taken all possible measures in this regard,” an official said.

CPWD officials explained the cause of the accident, stating: “While the Portico works finished, an accidental contact between the boom pump, used for the transfer of liquid concrete on the plate, and the scaffold led to the collapse of the support structure, which led to the accident.”

Following the incident, Hyderabad University took several steps. The police were immediately informed and a thread was deposited. The site supervisor was arrested for query.

The University Administration is also in the process of submitting a separate complaint regarding the incident.

A committee will be constituted by the University until March 3 to investigate the circumstances that led to the accident, to perform a building audit under construction and will submit a report as soon as possible. Specific reference terms for investigation will be completed by Saturday. The committee will also examine the quality and safety of all other buildings under construction on campus and will recommend the necessary measures to prevent such incidents in the future.

CPWD was requested to present a detailed report on the incident, emphasizing the corrective and preventive steps that must be implemented at all the construction sites on campus. The University also guided the medical care to be provided to the injured workers, with medical expenses covered by the contractor or agency, according to the memorandum of understanding. In addition, injured workers will be compensated in accordance with the laws of the predominant work.
