Deputy Assin South, John Ntim Fordjour, requested President John Dramanani Mahama to demonstrate his commitment to the values of the traditional family, supporting the draft law of existing private members, aimed at banning LGBTQ+, rather than introducing a separate proposal.

His comments follow Mahama’s recent announcement that the discussions are in progress with the President of the Parliament to reintroduce the draft law on the appropriate family values, which aims to restrict the LGBTQ+ activities in Ghana.

Speaking with the media -media on Friday, February 28, Nim Fordjour stressed that he and other legislators have already resumed the draft law, which are currently waiting for review in Parliament. He advised the president to support the current legislation and propose any changes needed later.

“If the president considers that additional legislation is required beyond what is already provided in the draft law, he can always introduce amendments afterwards,” he said.

Deputy Assin South claimed that the introduction of a separate law drafted by the government undermines the significance of the private legislation sponsored by the members, which plays a recognized role in the parliamentary processes.

“In order for him not to take into account the draft law of a private member, he must remember that the Parliament is operating independently and is not subject to executive directives. The Parliament can cooperate with the Government on the draft laws sponsored by the state, but does not take instructions from the Executive, ”he said.

Nim Fordjour reiterated that, instead of writing a new bill, the president should collaborate with the parliamentarians to improve the existing one, ensuring his effectiveness in approaching the concerns about the LGBTQ+ activities in Ghana.
