Yunus emphasizes the documentation of atrocities committed by the past regime

Chief Councilor Professor Muhammad Yunus today emphasized the documentation of all the atrocities committed during the regime of the prime minister eliminated Sheikh Hasina, including the repression on the protesters from Shapla Chattar, the police officer against the protesters against Delwar Hossain Sayeedi and the extrajudicial killings of the year.

“It requires adequate documentation of all the atrocities committed against the people of this country. Unless this documentation is made, it is difficult to know the truth and to ensure the justice,” said the chief counselor.

The chief counselor made this comment when Gwyn Lewis, the United Nations Resident coordinator in Bangladesh, and Huma Khan, the main human rights counselor at the UN Resident Coordinator’s office, called him to Jamuna’s state guest house.

Lewis said that the UN is ready to provide technical assistance and help people in Bangladesh develop their ability in this regard.

“This is the process of healing and establishing the truth,” Lewis said.

The chief counselor thanked the UN for his report on finding the facts on human rights and abuses related to July and August 2024 in Bangladesh.

“We are very happy to see that the UN has published the report. It came in time. It was not an easy task,” said the chief counselor.

Lewis informed the chief counselor that the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk will inform the Member States of his findings on March 5 in the 55 -a Human Rights Council sessions.

The resident coordinator hoped that the future Visit of the UN Secretary General, Antonio Getterres, in Bangladesh, will bring the Rohingya crisis back to the global attention, against the background of declining aid.

“We are very worried about the situation of money,” she said, adding that, every month, $ 15 million are needed just to ensure food supply for Rohingyas, along with other basic needs.

Guterres will visit Bangladesh from March 13 to March 16.
