The number of road deaths in the UK has reached a “gloomy and shameful” stage and exceeded the number of British citizens killed in 1926 – including the total number of deaths in the UK during World War II. The “boring” figures were presented at a Knowsley The council control meeting this week, because the elected members considered a report in the local transport plan of the Liverpool region (LTP).

The main officer for the transport policy for the combined authority of the Liverpool region, Huw Jenkins informed the LTP counselors and its ambitions to diversify the Merseyside transport offer and make the travel more accessible, because 30.2% of the LCR households have no car, compared to 23.5% in England. The LTP includes provisions for the six local authorities in the LCR and aims to address a number of transport issues, including proposals to reduce carbon emissions, improve air quality and approach the number of deaths and wounds on roads.

The LTP project was agreed in September 2024 and was subject to public consultation. It establishes how transport should support communities and include proposals for railways, buses and active travel and how they intersect with modern ways to live, work and travel.

Mr. Jenkins was clear that the LTP is not “anti-auto”, but also noted the importance of reducing car consumption and providing alternative, more efficient ways to travel to the region and around. The Council’s report has highlighted the explosion in the use of cars over the last 70 years and the impact on urban planning decisions and quality of life for local communities.

Mr. Jenkins added: “The very high price I paid for this increase in car use is a truly tragic and accentuated person (in terms of), who are seriously killed and injured. We have taken incredible steps in the city region to reduce the number of deaths and injuries on our roads, but they are still persistent.

“In the previous year, I think 568 people were killed or seriously injured by trafficking in the Liverpool region.

“This is a truly boring fact. More people died because of 1926 road traffic collisions than we lost in the war.

“Half a million people have died from traffic collisions, so a priority in the plan is to reiterate the” zero vision “of the Combined Metro mayor, which is not to be deaths and there are no serious injuries on our roads.”
