The medical and safety committee helps the first respondents to NRG Park – Houston Public Media

Thousands of people participate every day at Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

At any time, an accident can happen. Therefore, it is essential to have medical professionals waiting for unexpected.

Among the volunteering committees serving the annual Rodeo, which takes place until March 23 at NRG Park, is the medical and safety committee. Larry Danna is a statutory member of the commission, who served for 44 years.

“When I formed the committee, it was only 32 of us,” Danna recalled. “Now we are talking about over 1,200 of us today.”

Houston Rodeo Monday greets The application of the law, firefighters, EMS and other emergency service agencies as part of the “first respondents”. Exist Free entry to NRG Park for all first respondents with a badge, plus four of their family members.

Along with the first respondents working in Rodeo, the volunteers from the Medical and Safety Committee are activated when someone is injured at NRG Park. The Committee includes experienced health professionals in the Houston area and is responsible for providing medical care for Rodeo visitors and assisting the crowd control.

It also serves as a connection between Rodeo and the Fire Department of Houston. Danna said that the committee consists of nurses, doctors and firefighters, among others.

“With so many people here, we have all kinds of wounds – everything, from small cuts, bruises to possible lacerations and even injuries,” Danna said. “I had babies who were born here. I had women who go out and are in the eighth (month of pregnancy) or the beginning of the nine months. Quite sure, they enter the contractions.”

The first aid stations are located on the NRG stadium, where daily performances and concerts are organized. There are also stations in the Rodeo carnival area, near the stadium and in the nearby NRG center and NRG Arena, where there are events related to Rodeo.

Danna said that working with the medical and safety committee was a satisfaction and cheerful experience. Tips that they recommend for Rodeo participants to happen well, stay safe and be prepared.

“Don’t go to buy a new pair of boots and you think you will have a good time. You break those boots first,” Danna said. “The next thing that is really important is to stay hydrated, especially when it’s hot.”
