Canada returns from a 25% electricity surcharge after Trump’s reprisals

The Prime Minister in Ontario said he would take over the electricity rate on three US states he announced earlier.

Ontario took a step back after the US President Donald Trump was climbing the tariff war, climbing the steel and aluminum tariffs by 50 %. After telling the US press he would not return, Ontario Premier Doug Ford He said he agreed to suspend 25 % surcharge for electricity imports in three US states – New York, Michigan and Minnesota – after his conversation with American Secretary Howard Lutnick.
In a statement issued with Lutnick and posted on X, Ford said that he and Lutnick will now meet on Thursday, along with the US trade representative to discuss the renewal law of the US-Mexico-Canada, before Trump’s self-imposed “the mutual tariff.”

“In response, Ontario has agreed to suspend its 25 % surcharge for electricity exports to Michigan, New York and Minnesota,” Ford said.
A few hours earlier, Ford blamed Trump for this unprecedented war and apologized to the Americans, because he said he would not return.

New tariff war between US-Canada

Trump has posted on Truth Social on Tuesday, earlier that steel and aluminum tariffs will move from 25 % to 50 % starting on Wednesdays in reprisals at the electricity surcharge in Ontario. Trump asked why US states should depend on Canada for electricity and said that it will declare a national emergency for the three Ontario states targeted with stopping electricity.
