The agreement has reached the case of sexual and physical abuse against Christian brothers

A matter of the civil court involving accusations of sexual and physical abuse at a Hobart Catholic school in the late 1970s and the early 1980s was partially resolved by trial.

Callum* told the Supreme Court of Hobart last week that he was sexually abused by school sports coach Stephen Randell and priest Phillip Green, while he was a student at the St Viril College in Hobart, who was led by the Christian brothers at that time.

He also told the court that he was physically abused by a secular teacher Tom Burke and three other Christian brothers who were teachers at school – a brother Doolan, Brother Tom Edmunds and Brother Trevor Parton.

Callum’s legal team claimed that the Christian brothers were vicious for Randell and teachers.

Callum gave evidence in court on Monday and Tuesday.

The court also heard from secular witnesses who were students at St Viril’s and from one who was learned by one of the brothers from a different school.

The process was expected to continue in Hobart this week, but Callum’s lawyer, Angela Sdrinis, said the Christian brothers made an offer to settle on Saturday.

Mrs. Sdrinis said that Callum accepted the offer.

She said that the opponent’s legal system is not “the best way to deal with requests for abuse.”

“It is very difficult for the survivors of historical abuses to go through what happened with them again and again.”

she said.

“It is not the best way to deal with requests for abuse, but it is the only system we have obtained, and our client was brave enough to take the problem in court, to give his evidence, to be examined, but in the end

Mrs. Sdrinis also thanked all the lay witnesses “who came and gave evidence and were prepared to give evidence.”

The amount offered by the Christian brothers was not revealed.
