What happens if: Season 1977

What happens if: Season 1977

In college football, games and inheritance can be decided by a matter of centimeters.

Throughout a large part of the history of university football, even a single loss could derail the hopes of a team for a national championship. An inclined passage, a bad call or an unhappy ball can throw the result of a game in the games with a score.

Inspired by historian Nebraska Cornhuskers trend to lose so many close games in the last decade, I decided to sink The history of college football To see how different the sport could show if the result of each game with a single score had been overturned the season in the season.

Welcome to What If: 1977 college football season.

Other what happens if the seasons: 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976

An era of football of the college would end this year. Following the season, Division 1 would be divided into 1 and 1-AA. Because of this future change, Major Bowls has strengthened its conference links for which they were known. Rose Bowl remained a match between Big 10 and PAC-8. The champion of the South -West Conference would play in Cotton Bowl, while the Big Eight winner will travel to Orange Bowl. Finally, the dry champion would visit Sugar Bowl.

The season started quickly, the number 1 Oklahoma endeavored to defeat Vanderbilt in the first week and collapsed in fifth place in the next poll. Next week will see the number 3 Notre Dame will lose in Mississippi and the future governor Nebraska Jim Pillen Would have climbed on Ice Bryant no. 4 Crimson Tide from Lincoln. Oklahoma and would claim the ranking no. 1 overcoming Ohio State in week 3. Alabama and Texas and cemented the status of title competitors with victories over the USC and in Oklahoma respectively.

The ComeBack Kid and The Green Jersey Game

Notre Dame had a season up and down from 1977. Joe Montana was in the fourth season in South Bend entered the 1977 season. Despite his wonderful talent and game in the 1975 season (1976 missed the cause of injury), entered season three on the depth chart. Dan’s Irishman becomes 1-1 and passed Purdue with 10 in the fourth time, before the injuries finally helped him to become reluctant to make a change to the quarter Montana. The return child did what was the best known when the Irish won the game.

The Irishman entered one of the biggest games of the season, with a series of three years losing at the USC. Notre Dames made his heating before playing in their blue shirts. He becomes a surprise for the team to motivate them for their big match. Green shirts hung in the locker room of each player as they returned to their final meetings. Notre Dame won the match 49-14, a pivotal turn for the season and his career becomes as head coach. The Irish fans were unhappy with becoming as a coach behind Ara Parseghian. The loss of the purds and again at the USC could have had serious consequences. Notre Dame Faithful could have asked for a change in the head coach until the end of the season.

Unbeaten teams: Texas (11-0)

The 1977 Heisman trophy was granted to Texas Longhorns standout, Earl Campbell. Known for his punishing running style and remarkable athletics, Campbell gathered an impressive 1,744 meters in a hurry and 18 touchdows during the season. His exceptional performance, including several memorable games in which Longhorns took the victory, won the coveted Heisman trophy. Campbell’s dominance on the field not only strengthened the status of one of the first running in the history of college football, but propelled Texas to a standout season and a Dana in Coton Bowl.

Texas led the meal of the regular season, finishing like the only undefeated. However, the next seven teams – Oklahoma, Michigan, Alabama, Notre Dame, Arkansas, Kentucky and Penn State – all finished 10-1, ready to claim a title if Texas Falter in his bowl.

With each of the first four teams blocked in a different bowl, any result, other than a victory in Texas Cotton Bowl, would result in voters to determine the result of the championship. Notre Dame was selected to cope with Texas in Botton Bowl, while Washington will face Michigan in Rose Bowl. Alabama would face the Big 10 Ohio State state in Sugar Bowl, and Arkansas will meet the Big Eight Oklahoma Sooners champion.

With the number 1 Texas and number 2 Oklahoma losing, Alabama had a great jump from number 3 to claim the title. However, voters had other plans. Convinced by the dominating victory of Fighting Irish in Cotton Bowl over the previous top team, both the AP poll and the coaches propelled Notre Dame de la Dan becomes the title. Not everyone was convinced that Notre Dame was worth it. The future coach Notre Dame, Lou Holtz, thought his raorbacks are as good as the Irish. Barry Switzer believed that Alabama should be crowned as champions.

Mizzou has the most significant leap this season, improving from 4-7 to 9-2 and claiming a weight from an eight-crown. Fellow Big Eeight Brother Kansas State links four other programs with the second most improved victory, adding eight from this exercise. Northern Carolina and Ohio State improve each with two wins to have undefeated records. Mac suffers the most, Central Michigan and Miami (OH) adding five losses.

Texas Earl Campbell’s legend has almost doubled the Heisman vote in the second place, Terry Miller, in Oklahoma. While Texas fits at 9-2, and Oklahoma states at 5-6, Earl Campbell has continued to run the country in hurry and sites. I expect a slightly smaller winner margin, but he still brings the trophy home to Austin.

Tar Heels undefeated can win a title in Sugar Bowl. In fact, Bill Dooley drove North Carolina to an 8-2-1 regular season, enough to convince Virginia Tech to make her the successor of Jimmy Sharpe. With Virginia Tech Gobblers, going 7-3-1 in our alternative world, she probably keeps Sharpe for at least another season. Tar Heels would probably try to keep Dooley, but more prominent schools can become interested.

Unbeaten teams: Ohio State (11-0), North Carolina (10-0-1)

For the second season in a row, the exercise raises Missouri Tigers in the Big Eight co-champions, along with Nebraska and Oklahoma. This would have been enough to save the head coach Mizzou and Veteran D-Day, Al Onofrio, his work for at least another season. With a general record of 9-2 (vs. 8-3 for Oklahoma and Nebraska), Mizzou receives the offer Orange Bowl.

Ohio State throws the result of the game to go to Rose Bowl to cope with Washington and a chance at a title. As a dry champion, Alabama holds an automatic lace at Sugar Bowl, on the opportunity to ruin the perfect UNC record.

Botton Bowl’s match remains the same, but the stake is significantly smaller. Both programs are now 9-2 in our hypothetical. This would take them out of the title, even if both unbeaten teams lose, because the winners with two losses of these games would have a much stronger case for a title.

I expect the orange and cotton bowls to go a similar way to reality, with Arkansas and Notre Dame Cruise for easy winnings. With the state of Ohio at Rose Bowl, Alabama now receives North Carolina in Sugar Bowl. Tar Heels had a strong defense that finished in second place for the season. The crime was a different story, North Carolina ending 68th in the nation in scoring. A balanced Crimson Tide team wins the game, setting the chances of getting a title.

Warren Moon’s Huskies was a decent, but not great team. Buckeyes had the best defense of the nation in 1977. Ohio state defense allowed only two passing touchdows while intercepting 22 passes. Finally, I think Buckeyes offers Woody Hayes the sixth title, putting two before the Bear Bryant legendary colleague.

A fine line for Dan becomes

Buckeyes winning the title is not as a change as Notre Dame that loses it in the hypothetical. Green Jersey’s game could have stifled “Dump becomes“Movement for a few weeks, but without a title at the end of the season, I do not think the fans would have been happy without another year in which he drove the team. I guess Bill Dooley would have tried to use his even better season to occupy one of the most prestigious jobs in college football, after taking North Carolina to the door of a title.

1977 what happens if it is an excellent illustration of how fine the line between greatness and failure is. His notre Dame teams became good, but the fans expected more after Ara Parseghian’s success. His reluctant decision to finally put the game in Joe Montana’s hands won a national championship and helped to propel it into the renowned room of College football.
