Kota’s district consumers’ remediation commission has registered a case against actors Shah Rukh Khan, Ajay Devgn and Tiger Shroff, along with producer Vimal Pan Masala. The Commission was called to appear in court for charges of deceitful advertisements regarding the product ingredients.

The case was submitted by the social worker and the BJP leader, Adramohan Singh Honey, through senior lawyer Vivek Nandwana. The case falls in section 89 of the Consumer Protection Law, which addresses the misleading advertising and misleading notices. The complaint claims that the celebrities, through their advertisements for Vimal Pan Masala, claimed that the product contains “Kesar” (saffron), which can mislead consumers, especially young people.

According to the complaint, the saffron’s market price is very high. Therefore, its presence in a Pan Masala product, which is available for a reasonable rate, is extremely questionable. The petitioner claims that the manufacturer did not provide any concrete test to substantiate this statement, and the warnings regarding the product packaging appear in so small fonts that they are not easy to read.

Following the complaint, the chairman of the Commission for Consumer, Mr. Anurag Gautam, issued a notification by calling the three actors and the producer to explain his position before the court.

This case again lit the debates on the responsibility of celebrities in the approval of the brand, especially for tobacco products, health problems or deceitful claims. In recent years, several Bollywood stars have faced critics for Gutkha, Pan Masala and similar products, which are often associated with harmful health effects. Many social activists and legal experts believe that public figures should be held responsible for the impact of the products they promote, because their approvals significantly influence the behavior of consumers.

As the case takes place, it remains to be seen how the actors and the brand respond to the accusations. This development could establish an important precedent in terms of ethical responsibilities of celebrities in advertising.
