In front of the US Starmer tournament announces the increase in defense spending

London (DPA -AFX) – the day before flying in the US, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced that it intends to increase the expenses to defense to 2.5 percent of GDP by 2027.

This is an increase of 13.4 billion pounds, or $ 16.95 billion, year by year.

Starmer said he announced the highest sustained increase in the nation’s defense expenses since the end of the Cold War, because “tyrants as little respond only to force.”

“Unless Ukraine will not be properly protected by Putin, Europe will become more unstable – and that will hurt us even more,” he told The House of Commons on Tuesday.

“We will ensure that this investment maximizes British jobs, British skills and British innovation.”

Starmer said that in order to finance the initial increase in defense expenses, he decided to reduce expenses with external help from 0.5 percent of VNB to 0.3 percent.

Starmer added that, subject to economic and fiscal conditions, its government will also establish a clear ambition for defense expenses to increase to 3 % of GDP in the next session of Parliament.

Keir will take questions in Commons on Wednesday, before flying in Washington for a crucial meeting with President Donald Trump.

Trump has recently asked NATO member nations to increase its share of defense expenses to take care of Europe’s security in the future.

“President Trump believes we should do more and agree with him. It’s about my thinking in this regard, “StarMer told reporters at a press conference later on Tuesday.
