The man loses $ 28,000 to the scam of his girlfriend in Shanghai

A Shanghai man lost almost $ 28,000 after falling the victim of a scam that involved a “girlfriend” generated by AI, according to Chinese state press reports on Wednesday.

The victim, identified as Mr. Liu, transferred almost 200,000 Yuan (about $ 28,000) to what he thought was the bank account of his online lover.

The scammers used a generative software of artificial intelligence to create realistic videos and images of a fictitious woman, “Mrs. Jiao”, to convince him that she needs funds to open a business and to help a relative with medical invoices.

The fraudsters went even until the creation of false identification documents and medical reports to continue to support their deception, reported reports.

CCTV, citing a police investigation, confirmed that the deception was carried out by a team of perpetrators who sent videos and photos generated by the victim.

Throughout the whole process, Mr. Liu did not meet Mrs. Jiao in person. CCTV has broadcast images of a woman depicted in various scenarios, including holding a palette of paint and standing on a street street, all being generated by AI.

This incident highlights the increasing sophistication of deception using AI tools to create convincing images, videos and even live interactions.

The growth of generative has raised concerns about the growth of online frauds worldwide.

Earlier this month, Meta, the US socializing giant, warned Internet users to be cautious for online relationships that promise romance, but require money, especially since scams involving generatives become more frequent.
