Singling the critical need for a multipathy approach to approach violence against women and other key issues, the president, Dr. Irfaan Ali stressed the need for specialized skills and partnerships to effectively face these challenges.
By addressing the ranks of the Guyana police force at the opening ceremony of the annual conference of Wednesday, the chief commander of the armed forces said that these cases require the force to adopt a different competence.

“When you look at domestic violence, when you look at violence against women, when you look at children’s care problems, all these problems are key and critical problems in which () the police are involved that requires a different set of skills, requires a different approach, which requires (SIC) another type of partnership,” he said.

Recognizing the evolutionary nature of these issues, the president emphasized the importance of global partnerships and collaborations in combating gender -based violence and improving the capacity to investigate law enforcement. “At the moment, we are partners with the New York Police Department (and) Canadian Royal Police. We also collaborate with key institutions, international institutions, to develop our ability and to develop strategies to meet gender -based violence and improve our receptivity, ”he said.
The president also emphasized the importance of strengthening the medical -legal capacities in the application of the law, especially in areas such as investigations on homicides. “In this regard, we are now partners with the National University of Legal Sciences in India to develop our capabilities and forensic capacity,” he said.

In 2024, the law enforcement agencies registered a 33 % decrease in the number of homicides due to family violence.
The government has invested $ 150 million to address sexual crimes and gender -based violence at the beginning of 2024, which allowed the Minister of Human Services and Social Security to launch a series of measures.
The ministry has supported approximately 1,500 people through its sexual unity and family violence. Also, initiatives such as the Center for Hope and Justice have provided counseling, legal assistance and other essential services to the victims of abuses.
The Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Dr. Vindhya Persaud, credited the 914 telephone line to help reduce incidents of domestic violence.

At the press conference at the end of the year, at the Georgetown Office of the Ministry, in January, Dr. Persaud revealed that the telephone line received over 14,000 calls, which included 293 which were related to family violence.
This service allowed the ministry to intervene in cases of violence when necessary and to effectively monitor incidents.
