Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau promised on Friday an “immediate and extremely powerful answer” for the US President Donald Trumpimposing “unjustified tariffs” on Ottawa.
Against Trump’s crisis on the illicit drugs that came from Canada, Trudeau said that his government will do everything needed to avoid tariffs.
“We will continue to do that work and do everything necessary to avoid these rates coming, but as we said, if Tuesday there are unjustified rates in Canada, we will have an immediate and extremely powerful answer, as the Canadians are expected,” said Trudeau by CBC News.
Moreover, Trudeau added that, “the first thing on the rates is to point out that our government and, indeed, all Canada teams, premiers, business leaders, community leaders, are focused on one thing, ensuring that they will come on Tuesday and for the following weeks, there are no rates imposed on Canada.”
“The rates that the president talks about next week are centered around Fentanil crisis that he is facing the United States, but we are also facing Canada, ”he added.
The Canadian Prime Minister also addressed concerns about fentanyl traffic in the United States, saying that “less than a percentage of the Fentanil that arrives in the United States comes from Canada.”
“And for months, I stressed that less than a percentage of the fentanyl that arrives in the United States comes from Canada. But we know that even that percentage, or less than a percentage, should be reduced, which is why we invested USD 1.3 billion in strengthening our border capabilities with Blackhawk Helicopters, with drones, with 10,000 people who do not patrol Brexhawk and to keep Canadians and to source for problems for the United States, “he added.
US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that he will impose tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico starting March 4, while doubled the existing 10 % fare to Chinese goods.
In a social post of truth, Trump has linked the transition to efforts to reduce illicit drug trafficking, especially fentanil, in the US “we cannot afford this scourge to continue to harm the US,” he wrote, confirming that the rates will enter into force as scheduled. “China will also be charged with an additional 10% rate at this time.”
