We will work to reduce military brutalities – Brorogya Genfi

The deputy candidate of the Minister of Defense, Brogya Genfi, said he would collaborate with his minister, to minimize the cases of military brutality against civilians.

Speaking before the Parliament’s Commission of Appointments, on Friday, February 28, 2025, Mr. Genfi said that it is necessary to strengthen civil-military relations and prevent isolated incidents of excessive force by security personnel.

He answered a question asked by the parliamentarian Builsa North, James Agalga, about the Ashiman military brutalities of 2023 and what will do through his minister’s support to promote positive civil-military relations.

On Tuesday, March 7, 2023, a group of soldiers stormed Ashaiman and assaulted residents after their colleague, the sheriff Imoro, was stabbed to death by unknown attackers.

Subsequently, the army described its actions as an operation led by information to retain the suspects related to the murder.

It seems that some residents were forced to roll on the ground in muddy puddles created by early morning rains.

In response, Mr. Genfi acknowledged that the public in Ghana holds the armed forces in Ghana in great attention and that there is a good relationship between the military and the civilians.

However, he emphasized the need to address isolated incidents of military brutality.

“The unfortunate isolated incidents are things we have to work on to reduce it to the least minimal,” he said.

In order to address the problem, he proposed increased civil-military commitments, including collaboration with the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) to educate the public on the role of armed forces and to promote mutual respect between civilians and military.

“I will help my minister encourage more civil-military involvements. The ministry can be hired with NCCE to have education on the main role and the respect we have to have for our security institutions, ”he added.

Mr. Genfi reaffirmed his commitment to work closely with his minister to address concerns about military bakeries and to encourage a stronger and more cooperative relationship between security and public.
