Top names for children in Ireland for 2024 revealed

The top name for children in Ireland for 2024 were revealed by the Central Statistics Office of Ireland (CSO) on Friday, February 28th.

While Jack occupies the list of names for boys born in Ireland for the eighth year in a row, Sophie appeared as the most popular names for girls born in Ireland for more than a decade.

The new entrances to the first 100 names for boys born in Ireland in 2024 include Rowan, Caleb and Tălaith, while new entrances to the first 100 names for girls born in Ireland in 2024 include Hallie, Rhea, Caragh and Aurora.

The range of names for boys born in Ireland in 2024 was 4,421, while the name range for girls born in Ireland in 2024 was 5.161.

“Jack kept the first place as the most popular baby names for babies in 2024,” said Seán Oconnor on Friday, statistics in the Vital Statistics section, commenting the tendencies of Irish babies.

“This is a position he held for every year in 2007, except 2016, when James was the most popular choice of name.

“Jack and James are in the first five names of boys in 1998.

“Noah and Rían are the names of the other two boys who make up the first three in 2024.”

O’Connor continued: “Sophie has held the number one position as the most popular girls names in Ireland for the first time in 2010.

“Éabha, Grace, Emily and Fiadh were the names of the other four girls who made the first five in 2024.

“While Jack was the most popular names for boys in Ireland for eight years in a row, there is more variety when it comes to the first place for girls.

“In 2024, Sophie was the most popular names for girls, while in 2023 it was Grace, and in 2022 it was Emily. Grace, Emily and Sophie were permanent matches in the first five names for girls every year in 2016, with Éabha entering the first five for the first time in 2021 and ranked second in 2024.

“Rowan, Caleb and Tarlaith are the three new participants in the first 100 names of boys most popular for 2024. Caleb got the fastest in the standings, going from 142 to 2023 to 91 in 2024.

“Looking at new girls participants, four new participants, Hallie, Rhea, Caragh and Aurora appeared, Rhea being the fastest girls’ names in 2024, moving 37 places to 93 in mass.”
