The Forest Commission suspends burn permits

Published 8:49 Sunday, March 2, 2025

Currently, an uncontrolled fire near Chapel Hill and another next to the Bess branch burns in Crenshaw.
In force immediately, the Forest Commission of Alabama suspended the issuance of all the burning authorizations until Sunday, March 2, due to the gusts and the relative relative humidity. The weather situation will be reassessed on Monday.

The very small relative humidity at state level and gust winds, combined with drying fuels resulting from lack of significant rains, have led to 95 wild fire ignitions today. In the last seven days, the agency has responded to 263 wild fires that burned over 6,400 forest acres in the whole state.

Anyone who has burned in recent days should check their fires to make sure they are extinguished. Smoking piles immediately adjacent to flammable vegetation have the chance to renew and spread under these conditions. Anyone burns a field, meadows or forest without burning permit may be subject to criminal prosecution for committing a class B.

A burn notice is in effect. Anyone who burns on the weekend could face charges.
