The most deadly English channel that crosses the history “a terrible human tragedy”, you hear about the investigation | World News

An investigation into the most deadly crossing of the channel in history has heard that, despite multiple suffering calls from the people on board the boat, “no one came to rescue them.”

An independent probe promised to find out the truth of what happened when a inflatable boat, it was believed to carry at least 33 people, captivated in November 2021.

name 26 people confirmed dead And four missing people were read as the investigation opened on Monday. Another body was found but never identified.

French authorities believe that 33 people were on board – including 13 women and eight children.

There may have been other small children who did not appear on the list of missing, said the investigation. There were two survivors.

In the statement of opening the investigation led by Sir Ross Cranston, Rory Phillips KC said that one of the important questions about the “terrible human tragedy” is why passengers were left in the water for more than 12 hours after suffering calls to the UK authorities.

Sky News investigated the incident in 2021

The first suffering appeal was received from a 16-year-old Kurd Iraqi boy, Mubin Rizghar Hussein-who said to the operator “Everything was finished” in the “creepy” call around 1.30 to November 24, 2021.

The boy, who is known to be one of the victims, called at 2.30 in the morning and said that everyone on board will die. He was told not to sound and that the help was on the road.

A border force ship, Valiant, operated the search and rescue in the UK waters that night, but did not leave until 2.22 in the morning and took an hour to reach the last known location of the migrant boat, known as “Charlie”.

He did not find Charlie and wrongly recorded another boat he participated in as a ship, despite “he had no resemblance” to the diving incident described in calls.

A helicopter worked that night too. He did not find Charlie and was raised.

When Valiant returned to Dover and the helicopter returned to his base, “the incident was marked to be resolved and closed,” said Mr. Phillips.

“At that time … All those times human beings who were aboard the small boat that sank were in the water, and the vast majority drowned,” he continued.

Another suffering call made at 3.11 may be the last received from the incident. Mr. Phillips said there is no attempt to receive an updated position from the appellant.

Around 12.30 PM, the first bodies were found floating in the water by a French fishing boat, he heard the investigation.

“It is said that one of the victims died just half an hour before rescue,” said Mr. Phillips. “The question if the loss of life has been avoided is not an academic one in this case.”

A report by a cold water expert concluded, while some people could have drowned immediately, most victims are likely to die over a long period of time.

Most of them drowned when they could no longer hold the wreck, by losing consciousness or by cardiac arrest because of hypothermia, said Professor Michael Tipton.

The investigation continues.
