Los Angeles – Thirty detention officers in Los Angeles County have been accused of their alleged role in facilitating “gladiator struggles” between youth detainees from a minor room in Downey, California General Prosecutor, Rob Bonta announced on Monday.

An indictment claims that the officers “allowed and, in some cases, encouraged” 69 fights among youth detainees from the Juvenile Hall in Los Padrinos, between July and December 2023, according to a statement from the California Department. More than 140 victims aged between 12 and 18 years were involved.

Officials said he started an investigation after a video for a “gladiator fight” was elapsed in January 2024.

Twenty -two of the 30 officers were notified at Los Angeles’s Superior Court on Monday. The remaining officers will be notified on April 18, according to the California DOJ.

Officers are experiencing accusations, including danger and abuse, conspiracy and battery.

“Los Padrinos Officers Hall have a duty to ensure the safety and well -being of those under their care. Instead, the officers accused today did the exact opposite – the supervision of” gladiator struggles “when they should have intervened,” Bonta said in a statement. “The indictment – and the submission of criminal charges – is an important step to respond to these officers and approach the deficiencies to the Juvenile Hall in Los Padrinos.”

The probation department of the county LA, which runs the installation, declared in a statement that he “fully supports and applauds” the Office of the General Prosecutor for Monday’s indictments and that all the officers involved are on without payment.

“Our department has requested the assistance of the law enforcement authorities when an incorrect conduct was discovered, which eventually led to the AG Office investigation,” the agency said. “Since then, I have fully collaborated with our partners.

“At the same time, we carried out our own internal investigations … Responsibility is a foundation stone of our mission and we have zero tolerance for an incorrect conduct of any peace officer, especially those dealing with young people.”

Los Padrinos had several problems and is in the state order to close. But the supervisors from the county took emergency measures to keep it open due to the lack of other minor facilities.
