Delhi HC give bail to the fighter Sushil Kumar

The High Court of Delhi granted the Sushil Kumar Olympic fighter on Tuesday in the case of the former national champion of Junior Sagar Dhankar, on the Chhatrasal Stadium, in the national capital.

Justice Sanjeev Narula granted Kumar’s exemption and guided him to provide a personal connection of 50,000 RS, with two guarantees with the similar amount.

Kumar, and others, are accused of assaulting Dankar in May 2021 for an alleged dispute of the property. Two of Dankar’s friends were also injured in the attack.

According to the post-mortem report, Dankar suffered brain damage due to the impact of a blunt object.

Lawyers of RS Malik and Sumeet Shokeen, representing Kumar, said the fighter has been in prison in the last three and a half years, and the criminal prosecution has quoted 222 witnesses, while only 31 have been examined so far.

All material witnesses have already been examined, the lawyer added.

While the criminal prosecution opposed the plea, Malik claimed that the trial will take a long time to conclude and Kumar should be given the abduction on the grounds.

Kumar was arrested in May 2021 and gave provisional bail for a week for knee operation.

In October 2022, the court framed CPI accusations to include murder, criminal conspiracy, intimidation and riots with a deadly weapon against Kumar, apart from the law of weapons, among others.

Dhankar, said the court, after being abducted and brought to the stadium, was seriously assaulted by several people accused of baseball and hockey sticks.
