Look Inside: Park’s safety panel shares emergency response strategies

Park City, Utah – a coalition of the best public safety officials in Park City will gather on Monday, March 10, for “Lessons in Driving – Public Safety Management“, A free event that explores how their interaction partnerships addresses complex challenges in a community that balances the needs of local residents with hundreds of thousands of annual visitors.

The event will take place between 7: 00-9: 00 PM at the Jim Santy auditor in the Park City library and will present representatives of the law enforcement services, medical assistance, education and emergency.

“He started with a conversation with the chief (Wade) Carpenter and we wanted to do something to focus on that portion of the public service community here,” said Scott Van Hartesvelt, director Leadership Park City, who will moderate the panel. “He continued to describe quite quickly that this informal, but truly interesting coalition, which formed between all these different agencies and how often they gathered, which surprised me.”

“Park City is a unique community when it comes to our public safety responsibilities,” added Van Hartesvelt. “Effective planning and management take in additional team, trust and emphasis on coordination on several agencies. This event gives residents a rare opportunity to hear directly from leaders who make critical decisions that affect their daily lives. “

The group will explore how these various agencies coordinate their efforts, especially during major events that tightened local resources.

“We have a unique city by the fact that our population is not very high and we have high expectations for the quality of our lives, for public health and safety. At the same time, we have hundreds of thousands of visitors who come every year and put an extraordinary tightening on these resources, ”explained Van Hartesvelt.

He mentioned Main Street closure at vehicles during the Sundance Film Festival, as an example of the complex coordination between departments.

“For a casual observer like me, it seems an interesting decision. I don’t know it was white -black, but it didn’t seem particularly complicated, “said Van Hartesvelt. “Carpenter told me about how this coalition had to manage this and about the amount of coordination between all these different departments to make this possible.”

The discussion will cover how these agencies form partnerships, manage disagreements, allocate resources and build decision -making processes. The additional topics will include emerging threats, technological changes in public safety, mental health challenges and creating confidence with underrepresented communities.

Van Hartesvelt stressed that residents will have direct access to key decision makers, with plans to dedicate up to half of the event for audience questions.

“I would like residents to see a lot of people from different agencies who can be on their own, working together for the benefit of everyone,” he said. “There are so many questions about the public safety that appear regularly and the strategies of application and how things change based on the political climate or other things … The people who are on this panel can answer.”

Panelists include Dr. Phil Bondurant, health director of Summit county; Wade Carpenter chief, Police Department of Park; Lyndsay Huntsman, the superintendent of the Park City school district; Dr. Austin Smith, Emergency Medical Director of Park City Hospital; Sheriff Frank Smith, Summit County Sheriff’s Office; And Bob Zanetti chief, Park City Fire District.
