Delhi: Man receives 10 years in case of acid attack; 3 victims awarded Rs 20 Lakh Compensation

A court here sentenced a man to 10 years of rigorous prison for attacking a man and the two minor acid daughters in 2017, noting that the punishment for a crime must comply with the brutality with which he was committed.

Noting that the incident destroyed the child’s childhood and removed the employment opportunities from the father, the court granted a compensation of RS 20 Lakh to the three victims as “restorative and compensatory justice.”

The judge of additional session (ASJ) Aditi Garg heard the arguments regarding the conviction against Raghav Mukhia (28), who was previously convicted in accordance with section 326 (causing severely acid) of the Indian Criminal Code (IPC).

In his verdict pronounced on Wednesday, the court sentenced Mukhia to a rigorous 10 -year prison, while mentioned a decision of the Supreme Court of 2005, according to which, the punishment for a crime had to comply and be in accordance with the brutality with which he was perpetuated and that he had to respond to the company.

Regarding the aspect of compensation, the court stated that women victims are students in 2017, and the acid attack prevented them from achieving their entire potential in their career.

He also noted that the father’s health was damaged after the attack and later suffered cardiac surgery.

” This incident has not only handled the family from a financial point of view, but also affected the members of the psychological family. Due to the acidic attack, the victim (the first minor girl aged 13 at the time of the incident) suffered 30-40 percent disability. “During the interaction, the court noticed that it has signs of acid burning on its body and humbly stated that it feels uncertain and under confidence because of the trauma caused by the incident,” said the judge.

ASJ Garg said that the second minor victim (8 -year -old at the time of the incident) also had signs of burning, and she told the court about the attack that made it “emotionally vulnerable”.

“Therefore, it can be seen that this incident destroyed the childhood of victims,” the judge said, adding that, because of the attack, their father lost employment opportunities.

“Therefore, it becomes imperative to offer restoration and compensatory justice to the injured persons,” said the court.
