Stepdad convicted for the death of the boy whose “allergic reaction to strawberries” was actually an overdose of fentanil

Hopkins Co., Ky. (Wfie/Gray News)-A step-branch father will spend 25 years in prison for the death of an 8-year-old boy who died after officials initially believed to be an allergic reaction to strawberries.

The death of Trey Harris, 8 years old, in March 2024, made national titles and caused officials to declare a warning about strawberries sold at a school funds.

Initially, health officials were worried that there was something wrong with the strawberries that could lead to Trey’s death, but then officials believed that Trey had an allergic reaction to them.

However, Trey’s stepfather, Antonio, was arrested two weeks after the boy’s death, while the police continued to investigate what happened. Police said he had found drugs and a weapon during a house search.

About a month after death, officials established that strawberries were not the cause and Fentanil killed Trey.

The coroner in Hopkins County confirmed that Trey died from a fentanyl overdose.

This toxicology report has led to an accusation of murder for the person, who said the police said he was already experiencing drug trafficking for a large amount of fentanyl found in his home.

The person was sentenced this week to 25 years in prison, after he was guilty of killing the second degree murder, aggravated the 1st degree traffic, criminal in possession of a hand weapon, the possession of marijuana and five charges of detention of drug parade.
