Damaged southern ovens -Detroit Water Main Break west to be replaced next week

Detroit – The crews continue to make repairs to the houses, after a main water break flooded a neighborhood from the south – the Detroit Vest.

The main 54 -inch water built in the 1930s broke out on Monday, February 17, 2025, moving hundreds of residents.

The crews worked for these residents to return to their homes, and by the end of Thursday, March 6, 2025, the director of the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department, Gary Brown, said the crews are expected to replace more than 40 ovens and hot water tanks, with another 30 more to replace.

About 10 are replaced every day on average, so by the beginning of next week, all the problems known with the ovens and hot water tanks must be cared for, according to Brown.

Brown also said that there are about 186 residents in hotels, and 12 residents returned to their homes on Wednesday, March 5, 2025.

The city has hired 10 contractors who have several crews in the neighborhood who work on cleaning, installations and repairs.

Last week, Mayor Detroit, Mike Duggan, said the city is using the next six -stage process to address each house:

  1. Inspection

  2. Remove the debris from the basements

  3. Sanitize and clean the houses

  4. Replace ovens and water heaters

  5. Bring the family through the house for a final inspection

  6. Move the family from hotel back to home

Brown also said that a third party administrator will be at Patton Recreation Center, on Friday, March 7, 2025, to address the community on the claim process.

The city said that about 171 applications were submitted, and 89 of them are for vehicles.

“We know that people need those vehicles to get to work and therefore we will quickly follow the vehicles,” said Brown.

The crews finished repairs on a 54-inch main transmission, which broke out on the streets of Beard and Rowan, officials of the Great Lakes water authority said, in a statement, on Wednesday, March 5, 2025.

Now that the repairs are complete, the GLWA engineering and operations are evaluated to determine the following steps to prepare it for service.

In addition, the Detroit water and sewerage department (GLWA) has completed repairs on its main six -inch water, which was damaged during the main initial break.

The necessary test of water quality will be done by the end of the week, according to GLWA.

The GLWA and DWSD crews also finished eliminating the debris from the sewers in the district affected by the break.

It is expected that DTE Energy will complete the repairs on its damaged gas line next week.
