Operation Spirit returns working to solve the cases of missing, killed natives

Tulsa, Okla.-resolving long-term cases and delivering justice is the objective of using advanced forensic medical technology to dig for answers in unsolved crimes, disappears and recovery of human remains.

It is called the Operation Spirit Return.

Othram, an accredited forensic laboratory in Texas, is partnership with the US Indian Business Office to help solve cases of killed and missing people.

They work to generate human identities from evidence.

2 News listened to the Case Management Director, Michael Vogan, to find out how this works.

“We have built a completely internal process to analyze DNA samples. That DNA samples can be from unidentified human remains or also suspect the DNA from the crime scenes and we work with the government at local, state and federal level to help them generate new investigation opportunities and confirm, ”Vogan said.

Vogan said he uses a really cool technology to bring answers to families and detectives who have been waiting for them for a long time.

“The Operation Spirit Return is an initiative to help resolve the cases of disappeared and killed Natives from the United States. Therefore, we practically apply our technology in cases that can benefit from it, in the hope of bringing answers for unidentified people and including suspicious cases that take place on the Indian land, ”said Vogan.

According to the National Crime Information Center, there were over 5,000 reports on women and indigenous girls killed or missing in 2016.

However, the Web Cherokee Nation website reports that only 2% of these cases were registered by the national system of missing and unidentified persons, which is a program of the US Justice Department.

Vogan said that Othram technology can be applied in any case that has available DNA.

“To your point of view and you know this from covering cold cases, but they are cold for a reason because they have tried everything and talked to everyone and have excluded a lot of suspects or have excluded a lot of potential missing people who could be the remaining remains and now they only need more information,” Vogan said.

Cherokee’s nation confirms that he hopes to start working with Othram in the spring.
