CEBU City is considering suspending F2F classes due to heat

The mayor of Cebu, Raymond Alvin Garcia, envisages the suspension of classes face to face in elementary and secondary schools as threatening extreme heat tissues, waiting for the recommendations of relevant agencies.

Garcia told reporters on Monday, March 10, 2025, that he will immediately suspend the courses if the forecast heat index exceeds 41 degrees Celsius, which is classified as a dangerous level.

He said he intends to meet the risk reduction office and disaster risk management Cebu City, the Health Department, the Education Department and other agencies in question to discuss their recommendations on class suspensions.

Garcia stressed that local chief directors have the authority to suspend the courses to ensure the safety of the students.

In the previous week, several regions and provinces in the country have already suspended face -to -face classes due to extreme heat, with the Philippine administration of atmospheric, geophysical and astronomical services (Paga) that forecasts heat indices up to 46 degrees Celsius in some fields.

In the province of Cebu, the Mactan Paga forecasts a heat index of 36 degrees Celsius for March 10 and 11, 2025, in the extreme caution category.

Meanwhile, according to a report of the Cebu City Public Information Office, the Department of Education-Cebu has prepared for the possibility of moving from face-to-face classes to modular learning if the heat index continues to increase. (EHP)
