The government promises $ 9.2 million in financial aid for Bahia Blanca, a city port of 300,000 people south of Buenos Aires.

The President of Argentina, Javier Milei, said a period of mourning after a lightning flood in the city of Port Bahia Blanca killed at least 16 people, with several still missing.

The president’s office announced on Sunday that the country will mark three days of national mourning on the tragedy, which came after the heavy rains escaped the city of Port Bahia Blanca. The statement did not say when the mourning period will begin.

“All the areas of the national government will remain dedicated … to assist the victims at this time of sorrow for all Argentines,” the Presidency announced.

The deadly floods struck on Friday, when a one -year rain, estimated at 260 millimeters (10 inches), fell in a few hours in Bahia Bahia and around it, an important city port to South of Buenos Aires.

The Security Minister of the province of Buenos Aires Javier Alonso confirmed that two girls, one and five years old, were swept on Torrent and were among the victims.

Mayor Bahia Blanca, Federico Susabielles, told a press conference that the floods caused $ 400 million in infrastructure damage.

In a post on X, he said “there are 16 confirmed deaths, but there may be more” as the continuous search efforts.

The storm has left much of the coastal area around the power.

The Minister of Economy, Luis Caputo, said about X that the Government authorized 10 billion pesos ($ 9.2 million) for financial aid for Bahia Blanca, which had 300,000 residents.
