Erbil, the Kurdistan-a campaign region was launched in Bardarash from the Province of Duhok to collect dogs without a master and would send to an Erbil shelter a week after a two-year-old lost his life in a dog attack.

“After the tragic incident in Bardarash, where a child lost his life, I started preparations for collecting dogs without a master. We have coordinated ourselves with the municipality of Bardarash and the office of the rayon governor and they support us in every way, “said Azad Mohammed, campaign supervisor for Rudaw.

The mayor of the district, Sirwan Hassan, said that the relevant authorities have come to the conclusion that the wandering dogs should be rounded after organizing a “comprehensive meeting”.

“Dogs are collected, and after their number reaches 100 to 150 dogs, they will be transported by truck to the Erbil’s wagon dog,” Hassan told Rudaw.

In 2023 a dog shelter was built without a cost of over 480 million dinars (around 320,000 USD). It is located on Erbil-Gwer road.

The large number of stray dogs in the cities of the Kurdistan region remains a long -term concern, population control efforts often face criticism from animal rights. Dog shelters from Erbil and Zakho have been reported, suffer from overcrowding and lack of food, which leads to precarious conditions and many of the animals that die.

Violence against dogs without a master is in the Kurdistan region, animals often considered a threat and a risk to public health. They are usually removed, beaten, hit with sticks and killed by cars and shootings.
