Do you request the Green Book? The new US immigration rule may request social media to manage information from millions

The US Security Department (DHS) has announced in a notification in the Federal Register, on March 5, 2025, that it will need social media information on millions of immigrants who want citizenship and green books.

The Directive recommends federal agencies to improve their verification and screening processes.

The notification stipulates that, in order to confirm the identities of the applicants and to evaluate the security or public safety issues, US Citizenship and Immigration Services will gather information from Social Media, but not passwords.

DHS is looking for public feedback

The Federal Erulemaking portal will be open for public comments on the proposal for 60 days. After taking into account the suggestions, DHS will choose whether to adopt, change or eliminate the rule.

If approved, the new rule will be imposed on nine forms: N-400 (naturalization request), I-131 (request for travel document), I-192 (request for advance permission to enter as non-unimigarant), I-485 (request for adjustment of the status), I-589 (asylum application and for restraining), I-590 (Relative petition for refugees/asylee), I-751 (petition to eliminate the conditions regarding residence) and I-829 (the petition by the investor to eliminate the conditions regarding the permanent resident status).
