Five years ago, on Tuesday, the World Health Organization announced that Covid-19 became a pandemic in which the world eventually woke up at the disaster.

WHO has already called his own alarm five weeks earlier. But that warning – which does not mention the word “p” – was not executed.

At a press conference of March 11, 2020, the head of the United Nations Health Agency, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, finally said that the aggravated outbreak could be “characterized as a pandemic.”

Only then many countries understood the severity of the situation and – far too late – it was thrown into action.

The pandemic, whose likes were not seen in a century, killed millions, shredded savings and encrypted health systems.

Shoc camera scene

Tedros has already modified the best alarm bell in the world, declaring an emergency of public health health on January 30, 2020. Pheic lasted until May 5, 2023.

Throughout February 2020, journalists have repeatedly asked about a pandemic, and at a press conference on March 9, Tedros indicated “the threat of a pandema became very real.”

The press conference on March 11 was scheduled for 5:00 pm (1600 GMT) in the lower chamber of the Strategic Health Center (SHOC) from the WHO headquarters in Geneva.

The emergency OPS Hub has been used for WHO internal morning updates about Covid and informing the press after -Amia.

The 59 -minute press briefing presented Tedros, the emergency director WHO, Michael Ryan and Maria Van Kerkhove, Lead Technical at the Who Health Emergence program.

Tedros took two pens from the jacket, adjusted his glasses, looked around the room and read Bombshell’s update from a print on his desk.

He started saying how the number of cases outside China has increased 13 times in the last week, and the number of affected countries was tripled to 114. About 4,291 people were dead and thousands in the hospital.

“We are deeply worried both the alarming levels of spread and severity – as well as the alarming levels of inaction,” Tedros said.

“Therefore, I made the assessment that Covid-19 can be characterized as a pandemic.”

Changing games

Veteran correspondent, John Zarocostas, stood in three places from Van Kerkhove.

The word “pandemic” changed the game, “he told AFP, who also participated in the historical briefing.

He said that the change came as a bigger shock for the outside world than for those in the room, who were following who.

“I had the feeling that (WHO) had to do this because they did not receive the anticipated reaction of the state.” From the Pheic Declaration for weeks earlier, he explained.

“He changed the political dynamics regarding the reaction of the national government. They all moved to full equipment.”

WHO has seen the announcement that describes a situation that has become obvious, rather than declaring a new level of emergency. But the world has seen it otherwise.

“The world was possessed with the Pandemic word,” said a frustrated Ryan on the March 2022 anniversary.

“The January warning (2020) was much more important than the March announcement.

“Do you want the warning to say you just drowned? Or would you like the warning to say the flood will come?”

New “Emergency Pandemic” button

Covid-19 Pandemic supported human society.

And they could happen again.

WHO says the next pandemic is just a matter of time.

In December 2021, WHO member countries began to draft an agreement on the prevention, preparation and response of the pandemic, to address the failures set out by Covid-19.

They have a final negotiation session next month to complete the text for the WHO annual meeting.

They have already agreed that the WHO chief will be able to declare a “pandemic emergency” from a higher level with a pandemic potential-which should draw more attention.

Tedros continues to warn the countries against the repetition of the panic neglect cycle that characterized the accumulation until March 11, 2020.
