Tanker employed by the American army hit by the goods ship

A freight ship hit a tank that transported jet fuel for the US government off the eastern coast of the United Kingdom on Monday, causing a large fire on both ships and triggering a rescue operation.

The incident took place in the North Sea, near the city of Hull, and the alarm was first erected to 9:48 AM (UTC/GMT).

Local MP Graham Stuart said 37 crew members on board the two ships were brought to shore and evaluated by ambulances.

According to the owner of the freight ship, one of his crew is missing.

Rescue boats, firefighters, a helicopter and an aircraft with fixed wings were implemented to respond to the incident.

Petroleum tank carries fuel with jet

The oil tank involved in the collision was the carrier of chemicals and oil products, with petroleum products, MV Stena Immaculated, which is managed by the Crowley maritime company.

The ship transports jet fuel for the American army at the time of collision.

“Immaculate stena has supported a broken freight tank containing JET-A1 fuel … The crew abandoned the ship following the multiple explosions on board,” Crowley said in a statement.

A spokesman for the Sealift Command of the US Navy confirmed that the civilian created ship was “on a short -term status” at the time of the incident.

The other ship involved in the accident was the Portugal package containers, sailing from Grangemouth, Scotland, in Rotterdam, in the Netherlands.

It is owned by the German shipping company reederei Koepping.

How will the marine life be affected?

Greenpeace Environment Group said it was too early to judge What kind of cleaning it might be necessary.

“The size of any impact will depend on a number of factors, including the quantity and type of oil worn by the tank, the fuel transported by both ships and how much of it entered the water,” said a group spokesman.

Tom Webb, leading lecturer in marine ecology and preservation at the University of Sheffield, said the area is known for its rich wildlife, including witch birds and water birds.

“The chemical pollution resulting from such incidents can have a direct impact on birds and can also have long -term effects on marine food networks,” he said.

The Mark Hartl of the Center for Marine Biodiversity and Biotechnology at Heriot-Watt University said that, although the images of the “worrying” ships, the impact on the aquatic environment will not be as harmful as gross oil, “because most of the JET fuel will evaporate very quickly.”
