Actor Ranya Rao breaks down in court, refuses physical aggression in arrest

Actor Kannada, Ranya Rao, who was arrested for smuggling 14.56 lei, broke into court, claiming that she was “traumatized and emotionally broken” due to “verbal torture and threats” in the custody of the Directorate of Information for Revenue (DRI). Given a special court of Bengaluru, Ranya denied to be physically assaulted, but claimed that she had faced verbal abuses during the interrogation.

“I was tortured and threatened verbally. I am traumatized and broken emotionally,” she said in court, according to NDTV. The statements appeared against the background of speculation about her possible mistreatments, after an image that showed her with swollen eyes and bruises has circulated on a large scale. However, DRI rejected the accusations, stating that the entire interrogation was registered on CCTV.

According to India today, during the procedure, the investigation officer (IO) informed the court that Ranya refused to answer questions during the interrogation. “She remains silent every time we ask questions. I recorded the entire investigation,” the officer said, adding that she really refused to answer when evidence is presented.

Ranya assumed that DRI officials pressed it in signing the documents against her will. “I cooperated fully with the investigation. I refused to sign only on the third day, but then, I complied,” he told the judge, adding that she was mentally harassed.

The judge asked why he did not raise the problem with her lawyer. “You were given 30 minutes to talk to your lawyer. Why didn’t you inform them? Why didn’t they file a petition?” He asked, according to today’s report of India. In response, Ranya claimed that she was taken to unknown locations and forced to comply. “I promise, sir, that’s what they do,” she pleaded. She also questioned the role of the legal team of the investigation, asking: “Why are the lawyers involved in the investigation?”

The special public prosecutor denied any knowledge of coercive query tactics. “I did not receive any such information,” he said, adding that CCTV materials could be verified if necessary. He said, “being questioned could be uncomfortable for the accused, but that does not make it torture.”

While Ranya continued to cry in court, the judge advised “controls” and rebuked her lawyer for interruption. “She answers our questions. Why do you examine her cross?” noted the judge, quoted by the report.

Subsequently, the court withdrew Ranya in the judicial custody until March 24 and scheduled the hearing of the bail for Tuesday, guiding the public prosecutor especially to submit objections.
