The Delhi government, led by the BJP, moves to the withdrawal of legal cases against the Lieutenant Governor: Report

The new government led by BJP in Delhi has begun to withdraw several legal cases involving disputes between Lieutenant Governor (LG) and the State Government, Ndtv reported Quoting sources.

This movement is seen as a step towards the conclusion of long -term conflicts between the representative of the center and the city government.

Among the withdrawn cases are those related to the appointment of the President of the Electricity Regulatory Commission in Delhi (DERC), funding for the Delhi Jal Board, the appointment of lawyers in cases of riots in Delhi, the training of teachers in foreign countries and the high level committee for Yamuna pollution.

During the Government’s term of AAP, the successive lieutenant governors Najeeb Jung, Anil Baijal and VK Saxena were frequently in contradiction with the Delhi Government for various issues, many of them reaching the courts.

Under the leadership of Arvind Kejriwal and later Aatishi, the AAP government accused LG of prevening the implementation of its policies.

On the other hand, LG accused the AAP of not cooperating with him.

Tussle with LG is seen as one of the factors that led to the AAP route to the Delhi elections last month.

The party managed to provide only 22 places in the 70 members’ meeting, while the BJP obtained 48, marking the return to power in the Capital after over 25 years.

The new BJP government is now led by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta.

One of the major content points between AAP and LG was the appointment of the President DERC.

It seems that the AAP was afraid that the center allowing to supervise the regulatory body could endanger its popular scheme of subsidies in power.

In 2020, AAP then accused Anil Baijal of memorizing in the selection of public prosecutors for cases related to the northeast-Delhi riots.

Another point of view between the AAP and LG government was the training program proposed in Finland, the dispute climbing to the Supreme Court.

The withdrawal of these cases is part of a wider effort to settle the confrontation between Delhi and the LG Office, as well as the Central Government, according to sources quoted in Ndtv report.

“The governance will have priority,” said a source quoted by Ndtv.
