Governor Rhoden signs trafficking in persons, correction invoices in law

Rapid City, SD (Kota) – two Senate draft laws that would prohibit the obstruction of human trafficking and would protect the correctional officers from South Dakota on Wednesday by governor Larry Rhoden.

The draft law of the Senate 58 revises the provisions related to human trafficking and prohibits the obstruction of applying human trafficking. In addition, the draft law of the Senate 59 revises the provisions regarding delivery, holding with the intention to deliver and holding unauthorized articles in a state correction unit. The two invoices will enter into force on July 1.

Lawyer General of South Dakote, Marty Jackley, said Bills would protect the victims, communities, correction officers and staff. Jackley considered that the laws regarding human trafficking were needed.

“One of the reasons why we felt we had to make a change in South Dakota was to better model some of the federal laws that worked and to have a working group, as we do, which has federal, state and local authorities that all works in accordance with the same laws with the same guide, and the goal is to protect young children.”

Jackley also believed that the Senate’s draft law 59 would provide the correctional officers with a better ability to maintain the law and order in the prison walls.

“We found that the prisoners were using mobile phones to communicate to harm the guardians and we eliminate those opportunities for them,” Jackley said. “I think, in general, the number one will serve as a discouragement element, because the detainees will now be aware that this conduct is not acceptable and there will be consequences.”
