Muslim communities of New Zealand sound alarm on the right of relaxation weapons

Istanbul

Muslim communities have raised the concern that the unraveling of firearms in New Zealand could lead to several deaths, as the government reviews the weapons, the local press reported on Friday.

The responsible minister, Nicole McKee, previously criticized the previous government reforms after the 2019 mosque attacks, showed that access to the weapons used in the massacre could be relaxed, according to Radio New Zealand.

In 2019, a white supremacist terrorist killed 51 Muslims and injured dozens of semi-automatic rifles in the Alor and Linwood Islamic Center mosque, which caused an almost total prohibition of such firearms.

However, the New Zealand government is now rewriting the law of weapons.

The New Zealand Muslim community is worried that McKee, because of his background, such as the spokesman of the Authorized Fire Owners Council, will be in favor of relaxing the ban.

“It is important for everyone to have the chance to provide contributions to how the firearms are controlled and, therefore, everyone has the opportunity to have a say in the act. However, as I do not receive a report on the first stage of the references, I think their concern is wrong, “McKee said in this regard.

The legislation is still drafted, so that the exact proposals of the government remain unclear.

Rosemary Omar, who lost his son Tariq in the Mosche’s massacre of Noor, criticized McKee’s position, saying he had an agenda and described his opinions about “playful” firearms.

“If he thinks it was just a mosque attack that does not equate to the fact that one day there will be another madman, who can go to a mall or go to a marae or a school,” Omar said.

Other prominent members of the Islamic community have questioned McKee’s impartiality in this regard, while one stated that the Australian terrorist has attacked New Zealand and not Australia, because Australia has stricter weapons laws and warned that the relaxation of the law can take place to another attack.
