By Evans Woranyo Ameamu

Keta (VR), March 15, the young people from Keta in the Volta region asks for their leaders to ask the new police inspector (IGP), Mr. Christian Tete Yohunu, to investigate the death of Jerry Kpesenu, popularly called “Maya”, a 45-year-old owner, who died in police custody.

The young people accused the police in Keta of beating and molested Maya to death, while he was under their custody.

Mr. Philip Abatsi, a youth activist in Keta, in an interview with the news agency in Ghana, accused former IGP Dr. George Akuffo so that he did not make enough effort to investigate and punish the culprits.

“I cannot say why the IGP immediately failed to launch a thorough investigation into the death of our brother and the urge of our youth leaders to ask the new IGP to deal with this alleged crime case and I think the new IGP is capable,” he said.

He said that the action of the police hierarchy and other relevant authorities under the former police management undermined the deliveries for the deceased, who also demonstrated respect for family and young people from the area.

He accused the family, youth groups and other interested parties to follow the case and fight against the injustice and brutality of the police in the area.

Mr. Abotsi expressed frustration for delay in search of justice, stating that “delayed justice is refused to justice and we ask the new IGP to take immediate measures to investigate Maya’s death and to bring those perpetrators to justice.”

Master Sedem Sedema Awadzi, another youth from Dzelukope, a suburb of Keta, said GNA that young people request autopsy results to determine the true cause of the death and prohibition of officers involved and set up a new committee to investigate the incident.

“Keta police used the gross strength to arrest people, which led to Maya’s death, I was asking that the police would be held responsible for their actions and that justice would be served.”

Maya’s death aroused outrage in the Keta community and not only, many calling justice and responsibility, while young people were determined to make sure that those responsible for Maya’s death are brought to the book.

The late Kpesenu was arrested and tortured by Keta Police on Thursday, June 6, 2024, in his house, after a tenant filed complaints against him to cease working tools belonging to an electrician, who visited the space to repair an air conditioning in one of the rooms.

Also, GNA investigations revealed that the tenant failed to inform the owner of “Maya” about the intention of the installation, and this led to a misunderstanding between workers and deceased, while the complaint was subsequently filed for his arrest.

The announcement of the death of the deceased under police custody has sparked speculation and accusations of non -professional conduct and brutality that led to the death of the deceased.

The young people in Keta have previously organized the press conference and demonstrations to protest against the death of their colleague, which they requested an independent investigation in case, as well as the private autopsy to reach the case button.

Mr. Kwame Dzudorli Gakpe, a member of the Keta Parliament, previously asked for the former IGP for the alleged death of Mr. Kpesenu, who died in police custody at the Keta Police headquarters, but without result.

Some citizens died in the hands of the police in bizarre circumstances in HO, Akatsi and Hohoe, whose investigations are remarkable.
