Home begins to grow in Calgary, it stops elsewhere in Alberta

The start of the February house jumped 44 % compared to one year earlier as per the last statistics from Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation.

CMHC said that there were 2,407 homes in Calgary last month, compared to 1,674 homes that started in February 2024 – and up to 1,629 housing starts in January this year.

Three other major cities in Alberta – Edmont, Letthbridge and Red Deer – experienced a decrease in housing, begins last month.

In Edmonton, there were 1,478 homes in February, compared to 1,642 in February 2024.

In Lethbridge, there were 24 start -up homes last month, compared to 19 in the same month an earlier.

In Red Deer, there were only nine homes in February, compared to 167 in February 2024.

At the national level, CMHC said that the start of homes in the big population centers (10,000 or larger) decreased by 17 % – led by Vancouver, where the homes begin to collapse by 48 %, and Toronto, where they decreased by 68 %.
