She also asked Yang why she did not receive any notification from UOB – where she had an authentic account – if her ID was used to open another.

Yang said that Serena, being a branch manager, has a way to “hide” the bank account.

Jane told reporters that she still has doubts on the first day. Only after “a lot of conversation” with Yang in the coming days, with him checking her program, he slowly convinced that she really investigates the case.

Fake inspector then gave him a letter that said it could be detained for 60 days for money laundering. He also warned him not to give up or share information about this with third parties.

And Jane did as she said. During this time, she had to do with the death of a family member, above the feeling under time and was overloaded.

“I wasn’t (I wasn’t) in the mood to decide anything … as you, whatever you want, just give it … don’t come and bother me.”

“He made me believe”

Yang’s next step was to redirect Jane to his “senior officer” to request a “priority financial inspection”.

This was revealed as a common method used by scammers to cause victims to transfer money to a given account.

Wanting to avoid being detained, Jane followed Yang’s instructions. She withdrew $ 500,000 from her savings and introduced it to a newly opened account at a Chinese bank.

The “senior officer”, who passed the “inspector Chong”, told him that they need her help to capture the banking inside as Serena.

“He made me believe … that I help the police.”

On December 18 and December 19, Jane made nine banking transfers from the Chinese bank account to scammers, each time under $ 20,000.

The scammers told her that these are “dummy” to attract Serena and that her real funds will not be affected.

At this stage, the real ASC was alerted.

But Chong was already one step before, after warning that ASC would call to inform him of a potential scam. He instructed Jane to tell the ASC officers that he knew what he was doing; And that he should not tell them the truth, because she already helps the “police”.

When the real ASC called – and repeated what Chong said they would – that was all he needs.

“I don’t know why they said exactly what he said. (That) made me believe what he said.”
