Thailand makes a regional effort to dismantle the scam centers throughout its borders, which are part of a The network of illegal facilities in South Asia -est It generates billions of dollars every year, often using people trafficked there by criminal bands, according to the United Nations.

Based on the early assessments of some of the 5,000 people out of extended cheaters in the Mywaddy area, hundreds voluntarily went there, said POL Genci Pitaneelalerboot, an inspector general with Royal Thai Police.

“Many people use Thailand as a way to slip into Mywaddy to find work, and this is not only the Call Center gangs, but also the work of online gambling and other professions,” said Pol genii in an interview with Reuters.

His comments contravene the disseminated reports that the workers in the center of the cheating in Mywaddy and around were victims, enticked to go there by criminal chiefs.

“Many willingly entered, only discovering that they were treated later,” he said.

A few former scam workers describe caught up in compounds, where they were forced to trick themselves online to transfer large amounts of money, often pretending to be romantic interests.

Although these cheating centers have been working for years, they have been undergoing renewed control after the kidnapping of a Chinese actor Wang Xing in Thailand in January, who was later saved from Mywaddy.

The incident has sparked a social storm in China, and Beijing sent officials to Thailand to coordinate the targeted operations to break the deceitful hubs such as Mywaddy and saving his citizens, many of them have now been flying at home.

“From the case of Wang Xing, there were 3,600 foreigners who traveled the MAE SOT and I did not find one who was fooled or forced to come,” said Pol like Thatchai, citing information gathered by the police control points established in the district of Tak, borrowing Myawaddy.

Among 260 people out of 20 nationalities who were sent from Mywaddy to Thailand in February, while the repression gathered steam, most were not constrained, according to the initial investigations by Thai authorities, he said.

Multinational coordination

Pol genrechai said that the repression so far has affected only a fraction of the vast operations in Myawaddy, which is on a narrow stretch of the Mae Sot city.

“They could be up to 50,000 or 100,000 people who remain, because we still see their operations,” he said, based on Thai police information, as well as the information collected by the Chinese authorities, who have identified at least 3,700 criminals who continue to operate in the area.

Starting with February, over 5,200 people have been extracted from mywaddy scams and around it, according to the Thai police citing Myanmar authorities. Over 3,500 were sent back to their origin countries through Thailand, which interrupted and electricity, internet and fuel supplies in the area.

With the deceitful workers who come from a wide range of countries, Pol Gen Thatchai said that he is making efforts for a multinational coordination center for the repatriation, investigation and sharing of information to follow the criminals involved in fraud operations.

Suspecting criminals extracted from Mywaddy and other scam hubs should be tracked in their origin countries, and the Thai police are ready to help where necessary, said Pol gen Thatchai.

The main objective of the Thai authorities is currently to help coordinate the return of the victims of the scam centers in their origin countries, thousands of former workers still stuck in the limbo on the Thai-Myanmar border, including some who strive to find their way back because of the lack of funds.
