Starting the tile of the New York ghost plates: What do you know

Since April, New York drivers will face rigid punishments for obscure, damaged or missing registration plates, also known as ghost plates.

This mission is part of a continuous initiative to address the use of ghost plates in the city, involving a coordinated effort between NYPD, MTA police and New York State Police.

According to officials, this marks the 65 operation of this kind from March 2024.

What is forbidden?

The new rules, which will enter into force next month, outline what the drivers have to do to avoid fines:

  • The plates must be securely and clearly visible.
  • The plates must be clean and devoid of obstruction.
  • The elements that block or obscure a plate, such as rust, plastic coatings or anything that make the plate not be read are forbidden.
  • Simply parking a vehicle with a dark plate could lead to a $ 50 fine.

Officials say that the goal is to improve public safety and prevent tax evasion, as well as the criminal activity related to ghost plates.

NYPD retired detective, Michael Alcazar, explained that these false plates are often used by criminals to avoid detecting during illegal activities in the city.

The city says that it has already registered significant improvements in traffic safety in speed room locations, daily violations decreasing by 94% and traffic wounds and deaths decreasing by 14%.

Drivers caught with obstructed plates several times could face a 90-day registration suspension.

The new regulations will enter into force in April, officials asking all drivers to comply and avoid expensive fines.

Congestion prices

This comes as the price plan of the New York congestion is facing a challenge from the Trump administration, which ordered the state to stop the program until Friday.

Despite this fact, state officials, including the New York government, Kathy Hoch, are committed to continuing the initiative aimed at reducing trafficking and financing transit improvements.
