A’ibom CP commands the probe in the supposed brutality of the police, extortion to Polytechnic

Akwa Ibom State Police Commissioner, Baba Azaza, has had a large-scale investigation on the accusations of brutality and extortion of the police, leveled by students in the Ikot-Osura local governance area, in the Ikot-Ekpene local government area.

A statement by the Command Public Relations Officer, DSP Timpon John, on Tuesday, said the Directive followed a meeting between the Police Commissioner and the management of the Student Trade Union.

The students previously organized a protest at the main gate of the institution, deciphering what they described as increasing the insecurity and harassment by security operators.

Leaded by the President of the Student Union, Geoffrey George, the agreed students converged around 8:15, chanting solidarity songs and displaying banners such as “End Police Brutality Now”, “protecting, saving, does not abuse” and “this extortion must stop”.

By addressing their concerns, the Azares reaffirmed the command commitment to human rights and assured that any officer found guilty of improper professional conduct will face disciplinary actions.

He said: “This peaceful dialogue aims to encourage understanding and strengthen police-study.

“The command remains determined in support of human rights and ensuring the safety of all citizens, including students.

The head of the police also stressed the need for collaboration between students and security agencies, adding that proactive measures have been implemented to reduce crime and increase safety within the host community.

He assured that, under his leadership, the command will maintain the highest police standards, while ensuring the protection of life and properties.
